Eligibility Requirements

Informal caregivers of community-dwelling persons living with Alzheimer’s or a similar illness. Participants need a computer or mobile device with internet. Webcams may be provided if needed.

About the Study:

TELE-SAVVY is built from an in-person caregiver education program that has been shown to decrease distress and increase feelings of caregiving competence and confidence in those who complete the program.

The program aims to help caregivers to understand the losses that the illness produces in their loved one —losses in thinking powers, emotional control, the ability to direct one’s own behavior, and the ability to do day-to-day tasks. TELE-SAVVY will help participants learn how to guide their person through all these losses.

The TELE-SAVVY program will helps build knowledge and skills, and a savvy outlook—to help participants provide care more effectively. It will help caregivers develop strategies for guiding their person through pleasant days and for dealing with outbursts and withdrawals that may occur.

Purpose:

Researchers are seeking to learn whether TELE-SAVVY is effective for dementia family caregivers. The questionnaires caregivers complete will help us learn if the program is helpful to caregivers. They will also enable caregivers to provide important feedback and recommendations for improving the program. Finally, the questionnaires will help us to learn how caregivers feel about the online format of the program.

What is Involved:

Most of TELE-SAVVY is done to fit with the caregiver's schedule. Caregivers participate in 7 videoconferences (one weekly) with other participants and view daily online video lessons as well as participate in 5-6 interviews over 12 months.

  • The weekly videoconferences will arranged to fit the caregiver's schedule.  Each weekly videoconference takes about 75 minutes.
  • The daily video lessons are each day in between the videoconferences and last about 10-15 minutes.  Participants can view these video lessons any time during the day that works best for their schedule.
  • How much participants read the manual and how often participants review the videos is up to them.
  • Each interviews last about 45 min – 1 hour.  There is one interview every 3 months (total of 5-6 interviews over 12 months. can schedule the interviews can be scheduled at the convenience of the caregivers.
