Smartwatch Reminder System - Virtual

Eligibility Requirements:

University of Minnesota researchers are looking for people who:

  • Identify as a caregiver of an individual with a physician diagnosis of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or mild cognitive impairment OR identify as an individual with memory concerns that has a caregiver.
  • Have the ability to participate as a pair, care partner and care recipient.

Additional requirements:

  • Person with memory concerns does NOT live in a care facility.
  • Care recipient has cellular connection where they live.
  • Care partner is over 21 years of age.
  • Willingness to use the Smartwatch Reminder System if randomized to the treatment group.
  • Person with memory concerns does not have unmanaged mental health diagnoses.

About the Study:

Researchers are examining the feasibility of a Smartwatch Reminder System for family caregivers of persons with memory concerns. The system being tested is designed to deliver reminders and cues to persons with memory concerns using a smartwatch. Family members can create profiles with pictures and information about themselves, which is transmitted to the smartwatch when they are in near proximity to the person with memory concerns.

Purpose:

Researchers hope that the Smartwatch Reminder System will help support social engagement and improve the quality of life for the person with memory concern and their family members.

What is Involved:

  • The care partner and care recipient participate as a pair (dyad) over the course of 6 months.
  • As part of participation, each person will be asked to complete a survey at their initial enrollment, 3 months, and 6 months. These surveys should take no longer than 45 minutes and will be completed from the comfort of their own home.
  • At enrollment, each dyad would be randomized, like the flip of the coin, to use the smartwatch reminder system (treatment group), or continue their usual caregiving routing (control group). If they are part of the smartwatch reminder group, they will receive a smartwatch system and will schedule a time to set up the system with a member of our research team, via Zoom.
  • After participation for 6 months, each dyad will be mailed a $100 prepaid Visa debit card to share, as a thank you for their time. A few participants will be selected for in-depth interviews at the end of the study.
