Shared Lives and Everyday Experiences in Partners (SLEEP) Study - Ann Arbor, MI

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Couples who are married or living together in Michigan
  • One partner lives with early symptoms of dementia (with or without a diagnosis of dementia)
  • Both partners are age 60 or older
  • Have adequate vision and hearing
  • Do not have a diagnosis of narcolepsy
  • Can use a smartphone
  • Couples will not be eligible if they live in a nursing or assisted living facility

About the Study:

Researchers at the University of Michigan are recruiting couples where one partner lives with dementia to learn more about their daily experiences, sleep patterns, well-being, and brain health.

Purpose:

The goal of this study is to learn more about the daily experiences and sleep patterns of couples living with dementia, along with how these factors influence well-being and brain health over time.

What is Involved:

  1. Both partners complete a phone interview and in-person cognitive assessments at visit 1 and follow-ups at year 1 and year 2
  2. Both partners complete brief check-in calls at 6 and 18 months
  3. Both partners complete brief smartphone surveys and wear a wrist activity monitor (similar to a watch) for 7 days. Smartphones will be provided to participants who do not have a smartphone. 
  4. After completing the entire study, both partners will receive up to $370 each as a thank you for participating. Checks will be distributed as couples complete each portion of the study.
