Eligibility Requirements

You must be 60-85 years of age, have high blood pressure, (i.e, >130 mmHG), a family history of dementia or mild memory concerns and not be engaged in regular exercise.

About The Study:

The rrAD study is testing several strategies that may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in individuals with personal memory concerns or a family history of the disease. These strategies include:

  • Aerobic exercise and training
  • Medication management for elevated blood pressure and cholesterol
  • A combination of aerobic exercise and medication management
  • Standard care with optional stretching program

Purpose

This study examines the effects of exercise and treatment of cardiovascular risks such as high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol in individuals at high risk for developing Alzheimer's disease.

What Is Involved:

Participants who have successfully completed screening will be randomly assigned to the study as controls or to one of three intervention groups.  Intervention group participants will  receive either exercise or cardiovascular treatment alone or in combination.

All participants will receive the intervention assigned to their group for 2 years and will have  periodic clinic visits & testing during that time.

If you are assigned to the control group, you may choose to do stretching exercises following exercise routines and materials provided by the study. Depending on your group assignment, the study may pay for fitness center membership during the participation period.
