PodCaring: Studying the Dementia Untangled Podcast for Caregivers - Virtual

Eligibility Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Experiencing elevated stress levels
  • Currently providing care* on a regular basis to a family member or friend with progressive memory problems
  • Have been providing care for 6 or more months
  • Provide an average of 2 hours of care per day (14 per week)
  • Reside within the United States
  • Fluent in English
  • Have access and ability to listen to podcasts

*For purposes of this study, care is defined as aiding in transportation, paying bills/ managing finances, meal preparation/ cooking, shopping/ errands, home/ yard maintenance, managing medications, etc.

About the Study:

PodCaring is a virtual study of the potential use of listening to the Dementia Untangled Podcast as an intervention to decrease anger, burden, depression and loneliness and increase confidence for caregivers. Dementia Untangled is a podcast developed by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in 2021. Offering expert guidance and support for the millions of people living with dementia and their care partners, this award-winning podcast focuses on innovative ideas, practical strategies, and proven methods in an approachable, conversational format.

Purpose:

There is very little literature on how podcasts may be used as caregiver support tools, though some relevant studies have been done on podcasts for mental health and medical education.

This study aims to expand the body of knowledge supporting podcast listening as a medium for increased learning and behavior modification for caregivers of people with dementia.

What is Involved:

Each participant will have 2 months to complete self-paced online study visits.

Caregiver participants will complete:

  • pre-listening questionnaires (~30 minutes)
  • 4 hours of podcast listening (8 ~30-minute podcasts)
  • post-listening survey.

Total time involved will be about 5 hours over two months. Participants who complete the study will receive compensation.
