About the Study:

According to VA estimates, nearly 500,000 Veterans suffer from dementia. To address the high burden of caring for a Veteran with dementia, the purpose of this research is to study the effects of a rehabilitative intervention delivered via mobile tablets (e.g., iPad) directly to the homes of caregivers. The tablets will be customized with educational and skill resources.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to test the effects of a tablet-based education and skill-building intervention on family caregivers of Veterans with dementia.

What is Involved:

  • Caregivers will be randomly assigned to either receive paper educational materials related to dementia and caregiving or receive a customized tablet (e.g., iPad), which will be used to participate in a brief series of education and skill sessions led by a dementia expert delivered directly to participant homes over the internet. The tablets will come preloaded with caregiver resources that can be accessed at any time.
  • The mobile tablet intervention consists of four weekly sessions followed by an additional booster session one month later.
  • During these sessions, caregivers will learn about dementia and the diseases that cause it, learn ways to cope with the stress of caring for a loved one with dementia, build communication skills, and be connected to various resources available to caregivers both within the VA and through other local and national organizations.
  • We will follow up with caregivers for an assessment 3 months after the intervention.
  • There is no cost to caregivers for participation. Caregivers will be reimbursed $25 for the four training sessions and $25 for each assessment and booster session, with total compensation ranging from $50-$100.
