About the Study:
Prior research has shown that physical activity may help to maintain and improve brain health in older adults. The purpose of IGNITE is to definitively address whether physical activity improves brain health. This could lead to policies and recommendations about using exercise to maintain brain health.
The purpose of this research study is to learn whether a 12-month moderate intensity exercise program in older adults can improve cognitive function and brain health (the ability to maintain attention and remember things). This research study will also obtain information on whether exercise enlarges certain areas of the brain and whether changes in the blood lead to improvements.
What is Involved:
Study participants can expect cognitive and fitness assessments, body composition measurements, MRI and PET scans, and blood draws. Participation will include multiple clinic visits for screening, and follow up visits at Week 26 and 52. During the exercise intervention the participants will have 3 trainer supervised exercise sessions per week at a local study-approved exercise facility. The exact amount of time will depend on the schedule and the availability of trainers at the exercise facility.
