About the Study:

After online eligibility screening, consent and baseline data collection, participants will receive 3-5 sessions of Zoom coaching for participating 10 minutes daily in a heart rate variability biofeedback intervention focused on balancing the nervous system through breathing practices and activating positive emotions, OR a neutral music listening experience. Assessments measuring key outcomes, including resting heart rate variability and self-report measures, will be administered at pre-intervention, mid-point, post-intervention, and 4 weeks follow up.

Purpose:

ASU researchers are interested in finding out how practices that engage caregivers in focusing on the breath or listening to music while sharing time with a loved one might help caregivers feel less burdened and stressed. Researchers hope to see if this time together helps caregivers feel more positive about the relationship and role with the family member needing care.

What is Involved:

Once participants have agreed to join the study:

Researchers will:

  • Schedule a time to meet via Zoom
  • Mail a packet with study information and a device (called “Inner Balance”) that will be used to measure heart rate patterns
  • Instruct participants in how to use the device to record heartbeats for 5 minutes
  • Ask questions about stress, burden in caregiving, resilience, relationship quality, mood, how you express your emotions and self-compassion
  • Assign participants to one of two study groups by using a random assignment. One group will receive guidance for a breath focused practice. The other group will be guided to listen to music
  • Meet with participants via Zoom for additional sessions to continue to coach them through these practices
  • Expect that participants will practice with the focused breathing or the music listening practice for about 10 minutes daily for 8 weeks
  • Will contact participants once more after 4 additional weeks to ask the same set of questions
  • Ask you to mail back the Inner Balance device
  • Interview participants about their experience in the study
