Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Core Center (ADCC) – Minority Cohort

Eligibility Requirements:

To participate in this study, participants will need to fit the following criteria:

  • Live in the greater Phoenix or Tucson area
  • Be able to sit for 3-4 hours (with breaks) for memory and thinking tests once a year
  • Are Hispanic/Latino or Native American

About the Study:

The Arizona Alzheimer’s Disease Core Center (ADCC) aims to develop a clinical database that will help to further research in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. While the ultimate goal is to find treatments and (ultimately) a cure for these diseases, the primary purpose of the ADCC is to better understand normal aging and the transition from normal function to mild cognitive impairment and the earliest stages of dementia.

Purpose:

The purpose of the ADCC is to identify and characterize early risk factors that predict memory and thinking problems in adults with and without signs of cognitive impairment.

What is Involved:

  • Volunteers will be screened by a clinician at one of the participating institutions and certain laboratory tests will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
  • Volunteers who meets entry criteria will be invited to enter the Arizona Alzheimer’s Disease Core Center (ADCC).
  • At the first visit, eligible participants will have a small amount of blood and saliva drawn for various genetic studies.
  • Upon entry and each year thereafter, they will take pencil-and-paper tests to assess his or her condition.
  • At the time of death, the participant will have an optional brain-only autopsy performed by a neuropathologist at Banner Sun Health Research Institute.­
