Parent, sibling, or child with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Usual sleep of 5.5-8.5 hours per night, with no sleep disorders (e.g, sleep apnea).
We are looking for people who can nap easily when they try, but we want people who do not nap very often.
Excellent health not required, but we will exclude for a recent heart attack or stroke or high blood pressure that is not being treated.
About The Study:
Some studies have found that regular nappers are healthier than non-nappers. Other studies have found that non-nappers are healthier than nappers, but those findings might be explained by worse health causing people to nap more. Likewise, resting quietly can have health benefits, but too much sitting could be harmful. This study will help the research team better understand whether or not napping and quiet rest are healthy behaviors.
To examine the effects of napping and quiet rest on various health variables, including the heart, blood glucose, amyloid-beta.
What Is Involved:
The study lasts about 5 and ½ weeks for each participant. Many people who work outside of the home will not be able to participate in this study. After completing an interview, questionnaires, and a physical exam, the participants will be assessed in their usual home and work environment for 4 weeks.
During week 1, participants will follow their usual habits. They will wear a wrist monitor 24/7 during week 1. Each night, sleep will be recorded with a “Z-machine” which is about the size of a cell phone. The research team will show the participants how to apply two electrodes (one behind the ear, one on the forehead), and connect the electrodes to the Z-machine. This will take 3-5 minutes per night.
At the end of week 1, participants will come to ASU following a 12-hour fast. Multiple assessments will include, mood, memory, an assessment of the heart, and a blood draw for glucose, insulin, and beta-amyloid.
Participants will then be randomly assigned (by chance) to one of two three-week groups (weeks 2-4). One group will attempt to nap for one hour per day beginning 5-7 hours after arising. The other group, will read/rest quietly for one hour per day beginning 5-7 hours after arising. Both groups will continue to wear the wrist monitor, and they will use the Z-machine for each nap or quiet rests session, as well as each night.
After week 4, step (2) will be repeated: coming to ASU following a 12-hour fast, etc.
