Next Steps

The Generation Study requires potential participants to undergo genetic testing. To be considered for the Generation Study, the next step is to join GeneMatch.

GeneMatch is a program of the Alzheimer's Prevention Registry, led by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, which matches people to research studies based in part on their genetic information. GeneMatch will provide you with a cheek swab kit to determine what copies of the APOE gene you have to determine your eligibility for the Generation Study. You will not be told your APOE results as part of the GeneMatch program, however it will help us to determine if you may be eligible for the Generation Study or other studies in the future. If you are eligible, we will contact you by email with details regarding the next steps.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Generation Study, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • 60 to 75 years of age
  • Normal memory and thinking ability
  • 2 copies of the APOE e4 gene

About The Study:

The Generation Study tests medications that may prevent Alzheimer’s.
  • We’re looking for volunteers who have 2 copies of the APOE e4 gene. This genetic profile may increase a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
  • Participants should have normal memory & thinking ability (no diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment).
Do you already know that you have 2 copies of the APOE e4 gene? Contact us at info@endALZnow.org
or 1‐888‐STOP‐ALZ (1-888-786-7259).

Don’t know what type of APOE gene you have? Join the GeneMatch program. GeneMatch may invite
you to join the Generation Study.

  • Not everyone who joins GeneMatch will be invited to join the Generation Study. Those who are invited are not obligated to participate.

Purpose

The goal of the Generation Study is to find out whether 2 experimental medications can prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms. In this clinical trial, we’ll test the study medications against placebo.

Research shows a link between a substance called amyloid beta and Alzheimer’s disease. The study medications may stop amyloid beta from building up in the brain.

The Generation Study is a pioneering partnership between Novartis, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, and Amgen with funding from the National Institute on Aging, and several philanthropic organizations. By joining the study, you could help influence the future of medicine.

What Is Involved:

The Generation Study is recruiting volunteers who have 2 copies of the APOE e4 gene. This gene may increase a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

If you know that you have 2 copies of APOE e4:
Contact us at info@endALZnow.org or 1‐888‐STOP‐ALZ (1-888-786-7259).

  • We’ll find the most convenient study location for you and connect you with the leading doctor and staff.
  • If there’s not a location near you, we may be able to offer reasonable reimbursement for travel related expenses. You can discuss travel details with study site staff if you are invited to join.
  • Not sure you want to join yet? We’re happy to answer any questions you have about the study.

If you don’t know your APOE type:
Join GeneMatch. This program, led by the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, uses genetic testing (through free cheek swab kits) to match volunteers with research opportunities like the Generation Study.

  • If you’re eligible for GeneMatch, you’ll receive a genetic test kit (at no cost to you), take a cheek swab sample, and send it back to the lab.
  • GeneMatch will contact you if you qualify for the screening phase of the Generation Study. Please note that you will not learn your genetic test results through GeneMatch.
  • Not everyone contacted by GeneMatch about the Generation Study screening has 2 copies of APOE e4.
