About the Study:

CarFreeMe study includes 6-8 sessions of educational programming that takes place on a weekly basis. CarFreeMe has been developed to assist individuals with memory loss and/or their families consider or adjust to driving retirement. The study provides video conference or telephone coaching sessions for the individual with memory loss and/or a supportive family member, as they prepare for or acclimate to driving retirement.

CarFreeMe is studying the effects of a coaching and educational program to support people who have memory concerns and are considering retiring from driving or are adjusting to driving retirement. The CarFreeMe intervention aims to provide strategies for decision-making and coping that allow individuals and families to better adapt to driving retirement in a way that promotes independence and well-being.

What is Involved:

If you are determined to be eligible:

  • You will first complete a survey that takes about 45 minutes to finish.
  • Then, you and/or your family member will review 6-8 modules together with a trained CarFreeMe coach. Family members may have an additional session to attend. The sessions typically occur weekly and last about 1 to 1.5 hours. The timing and exact number of sessions is individualized.
  • You will complete 3 surveys:   a baseline before the sessions, 3 months and 6 months.

After you have completed the study, researchers may ask you to participate in a phone interview. The purpose of this interview is to get your feedback about the CarFreeMe program.
