This is a virtual study for mild to moderately depressed caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease whose caregiving responsibilities are causing them to feel burdened. Study participation, depending on where each participant is placed, will last 12 weeks and involve apps downloaded to the participant’s mobile phone and surveys taken online. This study aims to find if mobile technology and applications can be used improve the lives and health of caregivers.
The purposes of this study are to (1) track caregiver health over 12 weeks, both with and without the use of the Mindoula app and (2) obtain feedback from caregivers to inform on the design of future interventions.
Participants start by registering at www.health-ebrainstudy.org and completing the first part of the study, which involves online surveys. Then, if eligible, participants will be placed in one of three groups and notified via email.
All participants placed in the second part of the study will continue to take the online surveys throughout the 12 weeks of participation. Participants in the Mindoula group will download the Mindoula and DANA apps and use them over 12 weeks. Mindoula is a messaging app that will connect participants with a case manager who will help them manage caregiving-related stress. DANA tracks cognition over time using game-like tests. Participants in the DANA Wellness group will download DANA and use it over 12 weeks. Due to limited availability, some participants will be waitlisted and will receive DANA and begin the second half of participation 12 weeks after signing up.
